About Awful Archive
Awful Archive is an independent history project about disasters, medical failures, abuses of power, and the stories that become distorted in the retelling. It began as a personal research collection. The published archive connects those stories with records that readers can examine for themselves.
The aim is to explain how an event unfolded: which decisions mattered, how a system failed, and what its consequences were. A striking photograph or an extraordinary anecdote can be a starting point. The article should leave you with more than the surprising detail.
Publisher and editorial responsibility
Awful Archive is published by @warezak_ on X ↗. Articles use the Awful Archive byline. The publisher is responsible for subject selection, source presentation, and corrections.
AI tools assist with research, drafting, and editing. Generated text is not a source. The evidence for an article comes from the records, research, and reporting linked alongside it.
How to read an article’s evidence
- Follow a numbered reference. It leads to the supporting source and an explanation of what that source contributes. Where a passage or page can be identified, the reference includes that locator.
- Check the kind of record. An investigation, a later memoir, and a newspaper account answer different questions. Important limitations belong beside the claim they qualify.
- Look for the explanation. Articles connect the chronology, the relevant mechanism, or competing accounts. This interpretation should follow from the cited evidence rather than fill gaps with invented detail.
- Check the revision note. A substantive update carries a date and a description of what changed. The historical event date is separate from the article’s publication and revision dates.
Films provide another way into some subjects, with chapters and their own source lists. An article can incorporate later evidence or corrections, so the film and article need not have identical wording.

- The article link and the sentence or detail you are questioning.
- A link to the supporting record, with a page or passage if available.
- The correction you think the evidence supports.
Please do not send private personal records or identifying details about survivors. A correction that changes the account should be recorded on the article; minor spelling fixes do not need a new publication date.

Awful Archive is not affiliated with the museums, universities, public agencies, or news organisations linked in its articles. Those links let readers inspect the evidence and reach their own conclusions.
